Menace II Society Soundtrack: Where Are They Now?

The soundtrack to the award-winning movie Menace II Society came out twenty years ago, on May 26, 1993. With memorable songs from MC Eiht, Spice 1 and KRS-One, the album captured the sounds of the streets from coast to coast and, like the movie, epitomized the simultaneous derision and celebration of hip hop in that era — an in-your-face mix of profanity, violence and preaching. Here, continuing our “Where Are They Now?” classic-album series (which last checked in with Janet Jackson’s janet), we catch up with the rappers, singers and producers who helped give life to O-Dog and Caine. —Alex Gale

Kendrick Lamar Says Molly Trend Is "Corny"

May 25th, 2013 | By

From Kanye West to Trinidad James, it seems like just about every rapper has thrown a “Molly” reference into their rhymes as of late, and Kendrick Lamar is not a fan of the trend.

Molly a pure form of the MDMA substance found in ecstasy has become extremely popular in rap records as of late, and was the inspiration behind Rick Ross’ controversial “U.O.E.N.O.” lyric wherein he rhymed about slipping the drug into a woman’s drink before taking advantage of her.

In Lamar’s view, just because something is popular doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. “Sometimes you have the trends that’s not that cool,” he told MTV News’ Sway Calloway during a show stop at the Hangout Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama, recently. “You may have certain artists portraying these trends and don’t really have that lifestyle and then it gives off the wrong thing. And it becomes kinda corny after a while.”

Lamar has already made his feeling about the drug known in the “B—- Don’t Kill My Vibe” music video by flashing a “Death to Molly” message at the end, and now he wants his intentions to be clear and his rap peers to be more lyrically creative. “When everybody consciously now uses this term or this phrase and putting it in lyrics, it waters the culture down. So it’s really just time to move on.”

The 25-year-old’s decision to not follow the crowd plays into his appeal. Rather than pretend to like being intoxicated, the Compton native has openly rapped about a bad experience with marijuana, and spoke on the downside of alcohol via his “Swimming Pools (Drank)” single.

Given the critical and commercial reception of his good kid m.A.A.d. city debut, Lamar has proven himself to be a success not by following an artificial blueprint, but in sticking to his truth.

“It’s really about keeping hip hop original and pushing away the corniness in it,” he said.

"Freeway" Rick Ross Wants to Fight Rick Ross for Charity

May 25th, 2013 | By

“Freeway” Rick Ross is ready to take his ongoing fight over his name to the ring. The former drug kingpin has an issue with rapper Rick Ross hijacking his name, and would be willing to throw a few blows for it so long as it’s done for charity.

During an interview on the Murder Master Music Show, he continued in his attempts to slander the MMG boss for impersonating his gangster persona, and explained why he’d sign on for the bout. “I would take him … if we do it for charity,” he said. “We go in and we donate all the money to some kids. I’d be willing to do that.”

Despite Ricky Rozay’s weight advantage, Freeway Ricky Ross is confident that he wouldn’t be much of a challenge. “Yeah, even though he’s ’bout 400 pounds bigger than me. That don’t mean nothing ’cause he look like he ’bout to have a heart attack anyway.”

The ex-con goes on to expose the Ross, 37, for lying about a criminal past, and took shots at his sexuality, alleging an intimate relationship with Diddy. “I saw them kiss one time,” he said. “Somebody showed me a video of where they kissed. They was on stage and they hugged and put their lips together. I can only imagine what they do in private. Hopefully those tapes never get out because I know they probably film it!”

Freeway has been feverish in his quest to discredit the Miami rapper, but hasn’t been victorious. In 2012 a judge ordered him to shell out $500,000 to cover his rival’s legal fees.

Trinidad James: "Doing Drugs Is Not Right"

May 25th, 2013 | By

Were it not for lines like “popped a Molly I’m sweatin’” Trinidad James may not have known music stardom. In boasting about drug use, the Atlanta native’s “All Good Everything” single turned him into a rap star, 10 months into learning how to rap.

Now, more than a year after riding that drug bandwagon all the way to the bank, he’s admitting that partaking in controlled substances is bad news. Responding to a Huffington Post op-ed penned by Kanye West’s former tour collaborator DJ Atrak, who addressed hip hop’s addiction to drugs, James told XXL that “doing drugs is not right.”

In explaining his position, James simultaneously unveiled an inner conflict. “Well, consistently talking about violence, and drugs and b—-es, that’s not the ‘right thing’ to talk about, from a Godly standpoint or from a moral standpoint,” he said. “But that’s what people want to hear! Like, how many positive rappers are really making it these days?”

Additionally, as an artist, the rapper makes no apologies about mentioning drugs but doesn’t believe he’s promoting the trend. “I wasn’t telling you to do Molly, I was just telling you about my experience,” he pointed out.

“When I made that song I wasn’t thinking about the kid who was going to listen to the song. I was just speaking about my life, and if you can relate, great. But why can’t you relate to the line, ‘Count your blessings?’ No, you want to relate to ‘Popped a Molly, I’m sweatin.’ That’s not my fault, you chose to listen and focus on the drug reference. That’s on you, my n—–. I don’t feel no type of sympathy or anything, because at the end of the day, I know what’s right and wrong. I’ve done wrong and I’ve done right, but these people who do stupid s— and blame it on rap… get the hell out of here.”

He later admits to smoking weed, before finally being blunt about the whole thing. Confirming that various opinions against the drug craze are warranted he fessed up, “At the end of the day, doing drugs is not right. It’s not right. Doing drugs is not right.”

Kendrick Lamar also recently weighed in on the issue, saying that the molly trend is “corny.”

Michael Clarke Duncan’s Grave Site Vandalized

May 25th, 2013 | By

Some people just won’t let Michael Clarke Duncan rest in peace.

The late actor’s grave has been vandalized with racist graffiti, a source tells TMZ. A family friend who stopped by the Forest Lawn Cemetary in the Hollywood Hills to pay his respects to Duncan noticed a sticker of a cartoon in Black face stuck on Clarke’s tombstone. The friend believes the sticker depicts Sambo, a racist depiction of a Black person and long considered a racial slur.

Duncan’s family has called the LAPD to investigate and the incident may be considered a hate crime. The hurtful sticker has been removed by law enforcement.

The Green Mile actor passed away last year, at the age of 54, of complications following a heart attack. His funeral was attended by many of his show business colleagues, including Tom Hanks, Jay Leno and Holly Robinson Peete.

Hopefully the culprit will be brought to justice soon and the Oscar winner’s family can move forward.

Charlie Sheen Using His Spanish Name for Machete Kills

May 25th, 2013 | By

The Anger Management star is going back to his Spanish in his next feature film, Machete Kills, and will be credited as Carlos Estevez, TMZ reports.

Estevez is, of course, Sheen’s family name that was ditched by his father, Martin Sheen, when he launched a career in Hollywood — Sheen’s real name is Ramón Antonio Gerardo Estévez and his father is from Spain. Only Charlie’s brother, Emilio Estevez, retained the family name. But the pseudonym is purely for professional purposes: none of the Estevez’s legally changed their names to Sheen.

Why go back now? It likely has something to do with the fact that Machete Kills is directed by Mexican-American auteur Robert Rodriguez, who takes great pride in his Latin roots. With such films as El Mariachi and Desperado, Rodriguez has brought Mexican pulp into the American mainstream and launched the careers of Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek in the process.

Machete Kills also stars  Lady Gaga (in her big screen debut), Jessica Alba, Cuba Gooding Jr., Michelle Rodriguez and Mel Gibson. The film is scheduled for release in September.

Tasha Smith: “People Should Celebrate Tyler Perry"

May 25th, 2013 | By

Actress Tasha Smith has made a name for herself playing outspoken, strong Black female characters. One of her onscreen personas, Angela, will be back for the third season of Tyler Perry’s original series For Better or Worse on the OWN network this fall. The actress, who’s  also known for her roles in Jumping the Broom and Couples Retreat, had plenty to say to BET.com about her work on the TV series, Perry’s contribution to Black actors and her acting workshop.

Angela, the character you portray on For Better or Worse originally appeared in the Why Did I Get Married movie franchise. What did you think when Tyler Perry told you he wanted to spin her off into her own show?
I first thought, “Yay!” But then the second thought was, “Oh my God! What are we going to do with her?” I was always concerned about Angela because she was always so loud. I didn’t want her to stay consistent with who she was in the movie. I felt like people would get tired of that week after week.

So how is Angela different on the TV series?
I was excited to explore the different dimensions of Angela after Tyler explained the different things he wanted to do with her. And I really feel we’ve accomplished that. She’s softer and she’s a little silly. She’s more fun. She’s not that combative even though she’s definitely a strong woman. She’s a little gentler, especially when it comes to her family and her friends. You see her as a best friend, as a businesswoman, as a mom and as well as a wife.

You’ve collaborated with Tyler Perry on several projects. What’s the best thing about working with him?
He’s been a wonderful friend and an ambassador of giving me opportunities as an actress. It’s been great to have someone like that in my life. My relationship with Tyler is also like musicians that work together. I understand Tyler as a leader, director and producer. I know how he likes to lead his band, and I know how to flow with him. He works a very specific way, everybody doesn’t work that way nor can they. I feel that he’s mastered his style and I’m one of those band members he knows that he can call on and I’m going to play my part.

He’s a groundbreaking movie mogul, yet always the target of lots of criticism. What do you say to Tyler Perry naysayers?
You have to respect him. He is a trailblazer, bottom line, he really is. If you even look at the way he works, people are looking at his [TV series show production] work model and are trying to duplicate it even to this day. Are We There Yet? with Terry Crews and Essence Atkins is one show that’s doing it and several other shows are modeling the Tyler Perry brand. Not only are they able to accomplish a lot of shows in a shorter period of time, but also the model is creating a lot of opportunities for actors that need to be employed. The truth is when it comes to actors, we need the Tyler Perrys, Salim Akils, and the Mara Brock Akils of the world because if we didn’t have their shows, our actors wouldn’t be able to make a living doing what they love to do. We have more reality TV shows that we do scripted TV shows. So what does that mean? You have a lot of amazing, talented unemployed actors. People should celebrate people like Tyler Perry.

You’re also an actress who is giving back. Tell us about the Tasha Smith Actors Workshop, your acting school.
My school is amazing — I’ve been doing it for over ten years and it’s the biggest blessing.  It’s a part of my purpose. Magic happens every time I have a TSAW workshop. It’s something I love to do and I’ll be doing it for the rest of my life. Many actors have come out of it, like Kiki Hanes, who stars on my show, plus Lance Gross and several other people. I love to empower actors to pursue their purpose and dig into another dimension of their creativity. I sometimes say I’m a better teacher than actress and I think it’s because I just care. And it’s so fulfilling to see people become confident and clear in their work in their pursuit of their artistry — it’s just amazing. If you go to TSAW.com you’ll see dates for workshops that will be coming up soon in New York, Dallas, Miami, Washington, D.C., and Atlanta.

As an actress, you’re known for playing strong, opinionated and outspoken women. Are you afraid of being typecast?
Of course. I’m looking for other on-screen opportunities but I also know how to embrace what I do really well. Julia Roberts, when she started out, she was funny. People called her to be funny. Angelina Jolie is sexy. They know if you need a sexy woman, you get her. Angela Bassett, she’s strong and righteous. And if they need that, they’re going to call her. I look at Vince Vaughn, who is funny and his funny is a homerun every time. So I embrace the thing that has created success and notoriety for me. And I don’t knock it. I am grateful that I have that. I don’t look at it as I’m being put in a box. I look at it as I created that part of me that I do well and that people embrace. It’s created great opportunities for me as an actress and has allowed me to have fun and do what I love to do. I will always continue to pursue my career and grow so that other opportunities come my way. And one day, people will get a chance to see the different parts of me they may not have seen yet.
